Squirrel Shape Activity

This Squirrel Shape Activity is inspired by fall and my little guys excitement at pointing out every squirrel we see on our walks!  Shapes are important math concept for our little learners.  It is great to sit down and make shapes with your children and talk about the different types of lines and the sides and lengths of each shape.  And then dive into an activity like this and see what they remember!

What You Need for this Squirrel Shape Activity:

Tape

How to Play:

Print off the recording sheet and the squirrel and acorn cards.  Cut apart the squirrel cards and the acorn.  I have included a basic version that includes the shapes circle, triangle, square, rectangle, star and heart.  If your child is ready to expand and practice more shapes, make sure you check out the challenge versions and additional shape cards!

To set this game up you will want to tape the acorn to the back of one of the squirrel shape cards.  You may want to print these on cardstock to make them more durable!  Now hide the squirrel cards all over your house.  Let your child loose and search for the sneaky squirrel that stole the acorn!  With each card they find, identify the shape and then turn the card over and see if the acorn is behind it.  If not, color in the shape on the recording sheet and continue your search.  Continue until the sneaky squirrel is found.  You can consider laminating the recording sheet so you can erase and play again!

Ways to Modify this Activity:

As with most activities, there are many ways you could modify this to match your child’s abilities!

1. As I mentioned before you can use the basic 6 shapes or use all 12 included shapes to make this more of a challenge.

2. We are already moving a lot in this activity which will be great for active learners.  If you want them to apply their knowledge of shapes, when you are done give them a shape card and see if they can go find something in your house that matches that shape!
