Fishing for Letters Kid Activity

Fishing for Letters

We had fun adding water to our four o’clock fun with this Fishing for Letters activity.  We are down to the final days of summer so we are pulling out all the water fun to keep our excited energy from taking over and turning everything crazy!  They truly had fun scooping up the letters and making their names.  And this activity could be modified to practice spelling words, sight words or any other magnets you can match!

What You Need to play Fishing for Letters:

Alphabet Magnets

Water Table or Bin filled with water

Net

Blindfold

Sidewalk Chalk

How To Play:

First, pick out the alphabet magnets that match the names of those playing.  You want to make sure everyone is fishing for the same number of letters, so in our family two of my kids have six letters in their names and one has four.  So we added two letters to the shorter name to make a nick name.  You could also add x’s also.  Now fill up the water table and dump the letters in!

You will also want to use your sidewalk chalk to write the names on the sidewalk.  Now you are ready to play!!  Have the players take turns being blindfolded and taking the fishing net and fish for letters!  We helped and told the player when the had caught something or if they needed to keep the blindfold on and keep fishing.

Once they catch some letters in their net, they can take the blindfold off and see if any of the letters they caught are in their name.  We had a rule that you can only use one letter each round and the rest have to go back in the water table.  If there is a match the player can go lay the magnet on the matching letter on the sidewalk.  If they caught all letters that are NOT in their name they throw them back in and the next player takes their turn.

Players keep taking turns until someone has fished out all the letters in their name!!  The youngest of my big three won and he was pretty pumped!  Happy playing!
