Children’s Book Movie
Our very first Four O’Clock Fun this summer was a Children’s Book Movie making experience! We have probably all been to a movie based on a well loved book! My kids love acting things out and using video editing apps, so I thought I would challenge them to take a simple children’s book and create their own version as a short! Make sure you read this whole post though, because I have some definite pointers to make sure this goes well for your crew!

How To Play:
The first thing you will want to do is pick a children’s book that your kids can use to create their movie. I suggest picking one to three books that your kids can choose from. Giving them too many options will most likely end in fights and spending way too much time on this step!! I recommend finding a very simple book. We did the Mo Willems book, “That is Not a Good Idea!” I picked this because it only has a handful of characters so we could easily have a child play each character. It as has simple dialogue so even my three year old had a part!
Now you can start filming! You can encourage your kids to make their own unique twist! My kids decided instead of a fox, it would be a minecraft creeper that would be the “bad guy.” And you can see my son above practicing his hungry look! If you children are young, or just struggling to agree, you might make yourself the director. Full disclosure, we did this activity for two days. The first day we had to stop because of arguments so the second day I came in and helped direct and keep the ball moving! You can film one page at a time, or one scene at a time and then edit it together later. If your kids are younger or are just struggling, I definitely recommending making Mom the director and all creative decisions run through the director!
Once you are done shooting each scene, your kids can use an editing app. My daughter loves this part, and she used Canva to add in different backgrounds for each scene and to put the videos together. We have also used Filmora before too! Happy filming!!
