St Patrick’s Day Shape Book

St Patrick’s Day Shape Book

I created this St Patrick’s Day Shape Book because honestly, I don’t see a ton of resources out there to practice shapes in fun ways.  So I wanted to create a shape resource that would go through what I refer to as the six basic shapes.  And since St Patrick’s Day is coming right around the corner, I figured we should add a little holiday flair to it!

How to Teach Shapes:

At the preschool level, I always keep shape instruction pretty basic.  We can talk about if we have straight or curvy lines.  How many sides does the shape have?  Do the sides look the same size?  I personally don’t feel the need to get very in depth.  Most preschoolers will begin to recognizing these shapes by sight given enough exposure.

How to Assemble the St Patrick’s Day Shape Book:

First you will want to assemble your book.  There are a few different options.  Obviously, you need to print off the pages first.  I always like to cut out the extra border on each page.  There are two pages on each piece of printer paper.  I like to cut the pages apart because then I can decide what order to put them in, but if you are making a whole class of books that may not be efficient enough.  If you do choose to cut the pages apart you can make sure the title page is first and then put the following pages in any order you wish.  Then staple on the left side.

If you will not be cutting the pages apart, use the cover page first.  Put it face down and then select your other pages and put them face up on top of the cover page.  Fold the pile in half and staple on the left side.

Inside the Book:

Now you can have your child complete the book.  Each page focuses on a different shape so you could easily do one page a day!

As you can see above, the heart page asks your child to roll a dice and then color a heart with the color matching the number they rolled.  When all the hearts are colored you can compare how many hearts of each color are on your page.

The rectangle page let’s your child practice comparing shapes to real life objects.  Their job is to look at each object and color in the check mark if it is a rectangle or the x if it is not a rectangle.

Next up, your child will look at all the coins and color only the circle coins.  Followed by a maze  to help our little leprechaun find his way to the rainbow.  Your child will color or dot all the squares to help him find a path to the rainbow.

Finally, your child will discover Little Leprechaun’s favorite shape by color all the spaces with his picture.  And then it’s bed time and your child will trace all the stars he sees in the sky.
