Alphabet Tic Tac Toe

This alphabet tic tac toe game is a great tool to practice letter or sound recognition with your child.  But let’s talk letter recognition for a second.  I know you could find a lot of research out there on “the best” way to teach your child their letters and sounds.  But I just want to take the pressure off for a moment momma.  The best way to teach your child is the way that works for both of you!  If you are working with your child in any way, you are already giving them a head start.

The way we have complicated preschool was one of my main motivators for creating my Preschool Made Easy program.  So I hope that is a breath of fresh air for you.  Let the unrealistic expectations roll away and take a breath and enjoy spending time reading, playing and yes, even learning with your child.  And if you aren’t sure how to enjoy learning with your child, this tic tac toe game is a great place to start.

What you Need:

-Tic Tac Toe Printable (Free at the end of this post!)

Mini Erasers or Math Cubes (optional)

How to Play Alphabet Tic Tac Toe:

Print and cut apart the Alphabet Tic Tac Toe Printable.  I have included both uppercase and lowercase versions so you can pick whichever is best for your child!

You will play the game very similar to traditional Tic-Tac-Toe.  Place the game board between the two players and decide who is Xs and who is Os.  Or you can use two different kids of mini erasers instead of the Xs and Ox cards too

Each player takes their turn playing on the grid, but in our Alphabet version, you must say the letter name in order to play on that spot.

We don’t not make this too competitive though.  If she doesn’t know a letter, I just help her out!  Remember it is always better to give exposure to the letters and not shame your child for not knowing the answer.

You can also easily adapt this to include letter sounds.  Have your child identify the letter sound instead of the letter name or have them give a word that begins with that letter to begin work on identifying beginning sounds.
