St. Patrick’s Day CVC Word Building
This week we are dipping our toes into beginning reading with a St. Patrick’s Day CVC Word Building Activity. CVC words are usually some of the first words children begin to sound out and read. So if your child can identify all their letters and letter sounds they may be ready to start working with CVC words!

What You Need:
– St. Patrick’s Day CVC Word Building Activity (Free at the end of this post)
How to Play:
Print out the CVC Word Building Mat and the letter coins and the picture pots. Divide the coins and pots into two separate piles. You could even put the picture pots into a small plastic play pot of gold! Spread the letter coins out face up so your child can see all the letters.
Now let your child pick one of the picture pots and place it on the first space of any horizontal line. If your child needs help identifying the picture, go ahead and help them! Then see if they can isolate each sound in the word. So for example, for fan, can they hear the FFF- AAA- NNN sounds. Then your child can find the matching letter for each sound and place it on the mat creating the correct word!
I would encourage you to let your child try to hear the sounds in each word by themselves first. You can hop in and ask them some leading questions if they are struggling. Hearing and identifying sounds in a word is a big pre-reading skill so take your time and trust that they will continue to grow as you do more and more of these types of activities!
