Free Preschool Made Easy Home Based Curriculum

It has been almost a year since I completed my Preschool Made Easy Home Curriculum!  It grew out of my own desire to have fun and hands on activities to do with my own kids!  It has been a labor of love to create these weeks for you all!  If you are interested in working with your preschooler at home, here is what you can expect from my program.

1.  Preschool does not need to be overly complicated.  My goal is for you to spend 30 minutes or less doing these activities with your child each day.  You don’t need to be overwhelmed by all the kindergarten readiness lists.  Instead, each weekday my program will provide you with one math and one literacy activity for you to complete with your child.

2.  Say goodbye to worksheets!  I have worked hard to make games and activities that are hands on and active because that is how preschoolers learn best!

3.  Each lesson includes a instruction sheet that also gives you ideas on how to simplify the activity if needed or how to give your child more of a challenge if you need that.  So no matter where your child is at in their academic progress you should have options each day.

4.  Also included are ideas to engage active or reluctant learners.  Often these ideas include adding movement, sensory bins etc.  It is completely up to you if you use these suggestions, because I get it, some days you feel like digging the sensory bin out and some days you don’t!

5.  My 30 week program will take them through the following topics

-letter and sound identification

-rhyming words

-syllables

-word families

-number identification (1-20)

– patterns

-shape identification

-measurement

-number comparison

– counting on

6.  Finally, yes you will need a printer.  I have printable activities for each day.  If that scares you, let me remind you that often times if you have a good complete set of alphabet magnets you can swap these in place of any printable alphabet cards.

Now let me show you the first week of activities!!

#1- Fill Your Desk Alphabet Board Game

One of the most important pieces of this curriculum is that I wanted to give different options for different ability levels.  I know not every preschooler is at the same place.  Even looking at my own kids, I had one who knew all her letters before she was 2 and one that took until after 4.  So to help make this workable for all levels, I have included multiple options for each activity.

For this board game, two versions are included.  This back to school theme focuses on letters A, B and C.  So there is a version of this game that includes only those letters.  But, if your child is ready you can use the version pictured above with all the letters included.  My son and I played this game last week and had a blast.  We rolled the dice as we moved around the board.  When we landed on a letter we said the letter name.  What you really want though is to land on the school supplies!  The first player to land on and “collect” all the school supplies wins!

#2- Preschool Made Easy Letter Sort

Next up is this cute easel and paintbrush letter sort.  After having two of my kids go through kindergarten, I can tell you that being able to identify letter names and sounds is essential for a successful start to kindergarten.  So much of the first part of this curriculum will focus on mastering letter and sound identification!  I have included the entire alphabet in this activity, but again if you are just starting out, you can stick with just letters A, B and C!

Each activity in Preschool Made Easy has helpful tips included.  These are things you can do to expand the activity to help reluctant learners.  So for example, this activity can be made more active by taping the easels on a plastic cup and then having them sort the paintbrushes into the cups.  You could put the cups all over the living room floor.   Your child gets to walk around the room to find the correct match!

#3- Dot Marker Letters

Dot markers are one of my preschooler’s favorite learning supplies!  His eyes always light up when he sees them, so if you don’t have any, I  recommend investing in some.  We use THESE kind and love them!

These mats not only give your child a pre-writing opportunity, but also more letter identification with the option to dot the matching letters on the right hand side.  You can even go one step farther by talking about letter sounds and identifying the four beginning sounds pictures on each page.

#4- Alphabet Match

The alphabet activity for day #4 is a notebook themed alphabet match.  Your child will use a mini eraser or other small manipulative to cover the matching letter.  As adults this may seem like a very simple activity, but for preschoolers that are working on letter identification this gives great exposure and practice with the letters.  Remember that exposure will lead to mastery!

Again, you can stick with just a few letters or you can do the whole alphabet!  This is a great activity to stretch them to work with new letters. Typically, it will be easier for them to find an exact match even if you need to help them with the letter name!  If your preschooler is ready for a challenge, I also included cards that match the uppercase to the lowercase letters.

#5- Alphabet Pick and Trace

The last alphabet activity in the back to school theme is an alphabet pick and trace.   You can have your child pull the cards from a bucket or you can hide them around the room and make a treasure hunt.  Each time they pick or find a letter card they get to find the matching letter on their sheet and trace it.

Again, if you are just focusing in A, B and C this week, there is a version that includes only those letters as well as the one pictured above that includes all the letters.  And if tracing frustrates you preschooler, I also included a version that they can just dot or color the matching letter.  So many options for all our different learners!

#6- Spin and Cover

For this first back to school theme, our math activities focus on counting, number recognition and number sense.  This activity is a fun spin and cover.  If you are just starting to work with your preschooler, numbers 1-10 may be too much for them, so I have also included a second version that is just numbers 0-5.  Both are included in the curriculum, and you choose what is best for your child.

#7- Number Puzzles

The next activity in this Back to School theme are these number puzzles.  This is an activity you can adapt to work with many different levels.  Of course, you can only use cards 1-5 if your child is just beginning, but I also suggest laying out the main number puzzle piece.  We like to put the rest of the puzzle pieces in a sensory bin.  As your child pulls out each card they can count and match the main number card that is already laying out.

Another great way to adapt this activity is to add movement.  Anyone else have an energetic boy at home?  Me too!!  I have found the more I can get him moving as we learn, the better it goes.  So take your puzzle pieces and hide them around the room or even just put the sensory bin on one side of the table and the matches on the other.  Movement is magic for active kids!

#8- Pull and Dot- Counting

This next activity uses our dot markers again! The activity again has both a 0-5 option or a 1-10 option.  You pick and print what is appropriate for your child.  Your child draws a card and counts the bookbags or the windows on the school and then they get to find that number on the recording sheet and dot it.  We like to use a sensory bin again to add some fun.

Another way we have added movement to our counting games is to give a specific move to go along with each card.  So if they just counted 5 book bags, after they find and dot the 5, they can hop five times.  Even those little bursts of movement will keep their brains awake!

#9- Crayon Number Matching

This fourth math activity gives you the option to focus just on number recognition or to flex those subitizing muscles!  There are three crayons with just the number on them, so if the dice and finger is feeling too overwhelming, you can just stick with the numbers and sort those!  But if you are ready for more of a challenge include the dice and ten frame crayons and sort!

We also have fun doing sorting activities with a sticky wall.  You can tape contact paper to the wall with the sticky side out.  Have your child put the crayon boxes on the sticky wall and then stick the matching crayons next to the correct numbers.

#10- Preschool Made Easy Number Play Dough Mats

We love play dough at our house!  These mats give your preschooler 3 different activities they can go for each number.  First, use your play dough to create the number.  Next, use the dough to fill up the ten frame correctly.  Finally, roll a dough ball and smash it on the pictures that represent the correct number.
