Llama ABC Order Activity.

This week I am sharing with you my first ABC Order Activity!  ABC or alphabetical order in it’s traditional sense is not what you would probably think of using with your toddler.  Most toddlers are learning letter and sound names and thinking about even using those letters to spell words, let alone put those words in a specific order would be over the top.  But, you know I love to give you guys different options of play so don’t tune out if you have a toddler, because I have a toddler friendly way to play with this activity too!

What You Need for Llama ABC Order Activity:

– Llama ABC Order Activity Printable (free at the end of the post!)

– Scissors

–Marker or Pencil

–Clipboard (Optional)

How to Play:

Print off the Llama ABC Order Printable.  Cut apart the word cards and grab a marker or pencil for your child to use.  You can post each llama word card around the room if you want to add some movement or you can just let your child do the activity seated too.  I recommend using a clipboard if you are moving around the room too! 

The first way to use this freebie is a more traditional use of ABC order.  Your child can find a word card.  Each card has a number on the llama.  Find that number on the recording sheet and then look at the three words.  Decide which word comes first in ABC order and write it first on the recording sheet.  Continue this process with the other two words on the card.  There are six cards total and I purposely picked all words with different beginning letters so it truly is a simple first step in ABC order.

The second way you can use these cards is to just focus on finding the one word that would come first in ABC order.  To use this version you will use the same llama word cards, but use the second version of the recording sheet.  Once again your child can find each word card, but this time they will look at the three words and only need to decide what word comes first in ABC order and write that word on the recording sheet.

The final way to use this freebie is geared for our youngest learners.  Sorting through multiple letters in a word is most likely too much for many of our kids but remember that the basis for ABC is literally knowing the order of the alphabet.  We can start building this skill by using these llama letter cards.  You can post all the cards or just used the first 5 to 10 letters in the alphabet.  Have your child find the cards and then work to put the single letters in a line in alphabetical order.  You could even set out alphabet magnets in the correct order so your child can bring their card and place it under the correct letter and create the whole alphabet line.  It’s a simple way to start thinking about ABC order!
