Halloween Literacy Activities

Halloween Literacy Activities

Despite the fact that September just began, if you walk through any grocery store in the country, you are bound to see Halloween candy already!  Which always prompts talke of Halloween costumes with my kids, and dreams of trick or treating!  So since we are already talking about Halloween, I thought I should just go with it and make some Halloween literacy activities!

Halloween Activity #1- Halloween Handwriting

Handwriting is something we are always working on with both of my girls!  So I thought we should but a Halloween spin on it!  Just print and assemble the dice.  I recommend printing the dice on card stalk for durability!  Then roll the dice and trace the next letter up in the matching picture column.

I made both uppercase and lowercase versions and also color and black and white.  And I want to tell you a secret…I don’t love the way the dotted letter font makes some of the letters (I’m talking to you K!), so I also made all versions in a gray solid font.  I’t light enought that you can definitely still trace it!

Activity #2- Feed the Candy Trolls

This would be a great center in a classroom!  Print, cut and grab some crayons.  Draw Troll cards and find the matching letter on the recording sheet, and color it in!  Keeping going until you have fed all the Candy Trolls!

This one comes in three different levels too.  Match uppercase to uppercase for beginners.  Uppercase to lowercase matching or uppercase to beginning sounds for those who are ready for more of a challenge!

Activity #3- Who Stole the Pumpkin?

We had a lot of fun with this search and find game!  Print and cut the pieces.  Set out all the ghost pieces face up, and then hide the pumpkin behind a ghost. (Make sure those who are going to look for the pumpking don’t see where you hide it!)

Let players take turns saying a letter and looking behind that ghost to see if the missing pumpkin is hiding there!  If the pupmkin isn’t there, color in that matching letter pumpkin on the recording sheet.  You can laminate the recording sheet and use dry erase markers to make these reuseable!  This game comes with both uppercase and lowercase ghost cards and recording sheets too!

Activity #4- Halloween Rhyme Sort

My preschooler is really starting to get into rhyming words, so of course I needed to make a rhyming activity for Halloween!

I would definitely recommend laminating this one!  And then I always like to add velcro dots because it really helps them see how many cards are in a group!  Playing this is simple.  Once your parts are cut apart, just find your rhyming words and put them on the same Halloween eyball card!  There are 14 different word families in this pack.  I would probably not give them all to your kids at once!  I would seperate them into groups of 3 or 4.  It would work great for a center in a classroom that way!  If you have someone who is still really struggling you could start each group by starting each word family with a card first.

Activity #5- Halloween Color Words Activities

My preschooler hasn’t really started working on sight words yet, but I wanted to get our feet wet with some color words.  This pack has 3 different activities.  The first one is a fun game!  Spin the monster wheel and cover the monster of the matching color.  There are 4 unique cards included so you can play with a group, or you could do it tic tac toe style and play on the same card.  Either way the first player to get 4 in a row wins!

With all of these activities I included a version with the color words in black and white for true sight word reading.  But for those like my preschool daughter that are new to this, I have also included a version that has the color words color coded (like the pic above).  So these should work for lots of learning levels!

Also, in the Color Word Pack are these Halloween color clip cards.  Again there is a version with black and white words or one with colored words.  To make these self correcting, put a sticker on the back corresponding with the correct answer.

Finally, there is a coloring sheet in this activity pack.  This would be a great activity for morning work!  We are always looking to include fine motor activities too and coloring is such a great fine motor activity!
