We are moving onto letter G week today with a garden themed activity.  I’m going to be honest with you all.  I do not have a green thumb!  I would love to have vegetable garden, but it never seems to go well for me.  Maybe it is just the reality of having young children with me every day, but I can’t seem to stay on top of the weeds and halfway through the summer my garden attempts are more full of weeds then vegetables.  So I decided last year to not put myself through something I just am not successful at!  It was a freeing feeling!   But our garden activity today is one that even those of you with my gardening abilities will be able to handle!  We will be planting an imaginary flower garden and practicing our letter recognition at the same time!

What You Need:

-Alphabet Garden Printable (free at the end of this post)

-Craft Sticks like THESE

Tape or Glue

Scissors

-Something to plant your garden in.  We used our sandbox outside once and a sensory bin with black beans for an indoor option.

How To Play:

-Print and cut apart the Alphabet Garden playing pieces.  We laminated our pieces too because I knew they wouldn’t last long with sand in the mix if we just used regular paper.  If you don’t have access to a laminator, I would suggest printing on cardstock if you are going to use them outside.

Next, you will need to assemble and “plant” the flowers.  Take each individual alphabet flower and glue or tape it onto a craft stick.

After all your flowers are assembled you will plant them in your sand or sensory bin.  Now you are ready to play!!  Give your child one of the larger flower cards.  Tell them you have a flower order.

– Each larger card has three flowers will uppercase letters on them.  Your child will find the three individual flowers with the matching lowercase letters on them.  Once they find the matching flowers they can give you your order.

This game can easily be played with one child or a small group.  And don’t forget if your child is ready for it, you can always start talking about letter sounds too!
