Make a Potion | Four O’Clock Fun

Make a Potion

My kids have always loved what we call “make a potion”.  In the summer they fill up the water table or the bird bath and they find all kinds of leaves and flowers and twigs and create a special “potion”.  So when thinking about our next four o’clock fun activity, I thought we needed to tap into the magic of this activity!

How To Play:

First, you will want to choose with your child what kind of potion they want to make I have made printables for several different options.  First, you could do a rainbow potion.  The potion directions tell you how many of ingredients of each color you need.  We made our potions outside so my kids found everything outdoors, but if you are working inside you could easily do this activity with a mixing bowl and some colored unifex cubes!

Next up, I have created three Alphbet Potions!  This was a great review on letter sounds for my preschooler!  And it was fun to see how they got creative!  When they were really struggling to find something for a letter they would often add an adjective to make it fit!  I say that’s good problem solving!  Again if you needed this activity to be more stationary you could use letter magnets or foam stickers and have them add the actual matching letters to their potion!

Finally is our favorite potion.  The one they get to make up!!  I challenged them to write down their ingredients (great spelling and writing practice for my soon to be 1st grader).  I also asked them what their new potion could do!  It was definitely a four o’clock fun hit!
