Alphabet Yolks Alphabet Game

I first created this Alphabet Yolks activity to go with our Letter Y week.  Some letters are just more of a struggle to come up with activities and Y is definitely one of them for me!  But this Alphabet Yolks activity was a big hit!  And with Easter right around the corner, this is perfect for those plastic Easter eggs you probably have in your house right now!

What You Need:

– Find the Yolk Alphabet Printable (Free for subscribers at the end of this post!)

–Plastic Easter Eggs

–Easter basket “grass” (optional)

– Some sort of bucket, basket or container

–Dot Markers

How to teach letter recognition:

First, lets chat about letter recognition games for a second.  Letter recognition is a foundational skill for our little ones, but I know there are many different methods you may use to teach this skill.  Some people prefer a letter of the week approach, others emphasize learning letter names and sounds together.  

As a fellow mom, I am not going to get caught in the weeds about what is the “best” way to teach letter recognition.  In my book, if you are working with your child in any way, you are on the right path!  But with that said I have tried to make my letter recognition games as adaptable as possible.  You can have your child identify letter names or sound or both!  You can incorporate it with your Letter of the Week lessons, or it can stand alone or with an Easter theme.  And I have incorporated both upper and lowercase options for you too!  Use it in whatever way fits your child and your goals best!

How to Play Alphabet Yolks:

To play this game you will want to print out the yolk cards and recording sheet of your choice.  Cut apart the yolk cards and put them inside plastic Easter eggs.  Make a little Easter basket with your eggs and Easter grass!

Let your child pick one egg at a time, open it up, and identify the letter in the yolk!!  Now they can find the matching letter on the recording sheet and dot it with a dot marker.  Keep going until you have opened and recorded all the eggs!
