Are you teaching your child the letters of the alphabet? Don’t forget that books can be one of our best tools! Studies show that how often a child is read to as a child is one of the biggest factors in how they will perform later on for standardized tests! Now, don’t start putting pressure on yourself and stressing that you haven’t read to your kiddo enough! (I’ve been there!) But I wanted to help you out and give you a list of some of the books we have found helpful when learning the letters of the alphabet.
These books below are our suggestions, but look at what you have at home! Check out the Library! For our family, the biggest part of my kids connecting the letter sound in the book we are reading was me pointing it out!!! There is no magic in the books I am sharing. If your kiddo has a favorite book and it’s subject starts with the letter A, read that book! Just make sure you stop and point out, and stop to listen to the sound! Some of our favorite books have also been found from random picks at the Library. So if you are short on books at your own home, take a stroll through the Library and see what you can find! Or, I have included Amazon links for the books, I am recommending.

Amelia Bedelia’s First Apple Pie– I loved the Amelia Bedelia books growing up, but when I got some of my old books out, the dated pictures didn’t have my daughters excited. This is one of many updated Amelia Bedelia books. With the same great play on words that we know and love, you not only get the letter A for Amelia, but also for apple!
Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day– This one is a classic! Poor Alexander! He has such a hard day! I love this one because it gives us the chance to talk about how we feel on our bad days, and to talk about how Alexander (and we) could have changed his attitude and his day!
Aqualicious (Pinkalicious)– My girls love this series. Anything Pinkalicious is good in their book, so of course we had to include this book. In this book Pinkalicious goes to a beach and meets a tiny mermaid! A cute read for little girls!
Alexander Anteater’s Amazing Act (Animal Antics A to Z)– This book is in a series called Animal Antics. They have a book for each letter of the alphabet and throughout the book they use as many words starting with that letter as possible. We just stumbled on these books at our library and my girls love them! They request one every week from the library! I highly recommend this series or something similar. These books give us so many opportunities to go back and find our letter words!
Ten Apples Up On Top!– Another classic! This story about a lion, dog and a tiger who are all trying to balance the most apples on their heads. One reason I love this book is it gives another opportunity to reinforce counting also. On books like these we always like to stop and count the apples on each page. It’s also a great story to talk about competition with your kids!
There’s an Alligator under My Bed– This is just a fun one from one of our favorite authors, Mercer Mayer. The story of a boy who lures an alligator out from under his bed, is definitely good for some laughs.
