Best Christmas Books for Kids

Reading is one of my favorite things to do with my kids, so this week I am sharing the best Christmas books for kids!  Each holiday season I love to get out my stack of special Christmas books to read with my kids.  We try to buy a new Christmas book each year so our collection can continue to grow!  Some years we have read one book each day in December, so in case you want to do the same, I wanted to share 25 of our favorite Christmas books!

The Christmas Story

This book was one of my favorites growing up.  It tells the story of the birth of Jesus and I was always enthralled by the glow in the illustrations.

Snowmen At Christmas

This is one book in a series of books featuring a group of snowman.  It highlights their adventures at night and this book has all the holiday fun included!

The Best Christmas Pageant Ever

This is the book I bought for our family this year!  It is another favorite from my childhood too!  This is a short chapter book and is best for elementary aged kids.  I am excited to spend some time during our winter break, drinking hot cocoa and reading this book.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas

Don’t we all love this classic?  One of my kids went through a BIG Grinch phase so this book holds a special place in my heart.  You could read the book and watch one of the movies as a family and make a whole night of it!!

A Very Spidey Christmas

We got this book from the library this year for my Spidey-obsessed three year old!  I know this isn’t one of the Christmas classics, but I look for any way to hook my kids into reading.  If that means a book with their favorite characters then I am in for it!

Frosty the Snowman

Frosty is another classic Christmas story!  Read the book, sing the song, and watch the movie!  You can do it all while telling the adventures of Frosty and his friends!

The Polar Express

If you have only seen this movie and never read the book, you are missing out on the beautiful illustrations in this book.  Your kids will be drawn into this story through the magical story and pictures on each page.

Christmas Look and Find

It is fun to mix it up too and add in an activity book in December.  Look and find books are fun and flexible.  We read them together and get to practice taking turns as each person finds an item in the picture.

Gingerbread Christmas

A Christmas themed story with the well-loved Gingerbread Baby characters.  Race through town with the Gingerbread baby as he tries to escape from everyone in town!

The Night Before Christmas

I will be the first to admit that some of the vocabulary in this poem is probably not what you use daily with your kids.  But this poem is such a part of our holiday history and culture that I think kids deserve to know it!  Add in some great illustrations and the difficult vocabulary comes to life!

Christmas Joke Book

Take another break from the fiction stories with this out of the box choice.  My kids were gifted this book and they love to pull it out and tell jokes to each other!  It would also be fun to do a joke of the day as a family during the Christmas season!

Llama Llama Holiday Drama

For all the llama llama lovers, there is a Christmas themed book in their collection.  Little Llama has trouble waiting for Christmas to come and can be a great book to talk about how your kids feel when they are waiting for a fun holiday or event.

Berenstain Bears Meet Santa Bear

The Berenstain Bears are another childhood classic.  My mom has saved all of my childhood books for my kids, so they have grown to love the Berenstain Bears too.  They are just the right length for preschoolers.  They tell a good story without being too long.  Meet Santa Bear is a Christmas staple for us!

Berenstain Bears Christmas Tree

The other Berenstain Bear Christmas book we love is The Christmas Tree.  Papa and the cubs go on a search for the perfect Christmas tree and of course end up learning a more important lesson!  It may even have a reminder for us parents in it’s message too!

The Nutcracker

There are so many different versions of The Nutcracker.  I like this version because I feel like the illustrations really look like the characters are dancing even though it is just a picture.  We have gone to the ballet with our girls and this would be a great book to read beforehand so they are familiar with the story.

A Charlie Brown Christmas

A reminder that Christmas is not about the presents, decorations or programs.  This simple classic book and TV special have been family favorites for years for a reason!!

How to Catch an Elf

The How to Catch series has characters for every major holiday!  The Christmas version is trying to catch an elf!  It is a silly quick read that will become a family favorite.

Elmo’s 12 Days of Christmas

Elmo has his own twist on the classic song, 12 Days of Christmas.  Elmo’s friends join him in this song/book.  You could even sing or read the original song and then compare the two versions.

Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer

Every kid should know the story of Rudolph, right?  Sing the song and then read the book together!  And yes, you can even watch the TV special too.

Home Alone

Okay, full disclosure, we don’t actually have this book, but I definitely want to!  One of my boys LOVES the movie Home Alone and all the sequels.  The review on this book are great and it would be such a fun story to read!  I am definitely adding it to our list for next year!

Muppet Christmas Carol

I remember reading the Charles Dickens book for school when I was in middle school.  The story is a classic and this muppets version tells it in a kid appropriate way.  Again, this is another opportunity to highlight with your kids the value of helping people and treating them with kindness.

Fancy Nancy Splendiferous Christmas

For the fancy girls in your life, Fancy Nancy Splendiferous Christmas is your perfect choice.  One of the things I love about any Fancy Nancy books is they are great vocabulary builders!  Nancy always likes to use “fancy” words and then tell the reader what they mean!  What a fun way to build a deeper vocabulary!

God Gave Us Christmas

This book is perfect for those of you who don’t want Santa to outshine the story of Jesus’ birth.  The little bear asks questions your little one may be thinking too!  And of course, wise Momma bear provides excellent wisdom.

The Story of Christmas

This is a board book which makes it perfect for your babies and toddlers!  The Story of series has various holiday books, but this one tells a simple story of Jesus being born and why we give gifts to each other.

This Little Piggy’s Night Before Christmas

I know we already have the original Night Before Christmas on our list, but this version is too cute not to include also.  We grabbed this book from the library and we have read it over and over again.  The little pigs have a busy Christmas Eve in this twist on the classic poem!

We made it!  That’s 25 Christmas books you and your family can enjoy.  Did I miss any of your favorites?  Email me so I can add them to my list!!
