I am so excited to share with you the first week of my Letter of the Week Curriculum! This project has been a labor of love for me, and I hope you enjoy it as much as we did!
All of the activities I am about to show you are included with the Letter A Weekly Plans, but there is so much in there, you will have to download the plans to see all the activities! So let’s jump in!!
Activity #1- My Letter A Book
I wrote a separate post on this one, here if you want more information on how to play the games or sing the songs. I can’t tell you how huge these have been for my little girl! She loves singing and there is a magical connection between our memories and music! I encourage you not to toss this aside for more “important” work!
Activity #2- I Can Read- Letter A Book
This is another printable booklet. I wrote a post on this book here. We start off every day of “Mommy Preschool” with these first 2 activities. My one year old loves to join us for this part too! Trust me, the repetition will be so helpful for your kiddo!
Activity #3- Apple Letter Matching (Whole Alphabet Activity)
This activity is so versatile. I included corresponding apples you can cut out and glue on, or you can use circle sticker labels too! My kiddo is still just focusing on uppercase letters so we matched uppercase to uppercase, but if you kiddo is ready you could do lowercase to uppercase. Both cutting and stickers are great for working fine motor skills too!!
Activity #4- Apple Tree Math Mat
This math mat focuses on numbers 1 to 10. My daughter still has a few numbers she is working on recognizing, so this was great for her. Put your number cards in a pile and draw one. Now create that many apples on your tree. We love to use play dough to make pretend apples, but you could use puffs or counters too! You can even pretend to “pick” your apples off after you are done. The more of a story you can make to go along with this, the longer it will keep their interest. Keep going with new number cards until you have completed them all! Don’t forget to remind them A is for Apple!
Activity #5- Count and Clip- Letter A
You will need a set of 10 clothes pins all numbered 1 to 10, and you will need to print the circle on cardstock or laminate it. Your kiddo can count the objects in each section and then find the clothes pin that matches, and clip it onto that section. This is a great fine motor skill again! Also, make sure you take time to talk about all the great letter A words! Ask you kiddo what words you have already learned about and if their are any new words?
Activity #6- Letter A Sound Cover
This is a quick hands on activity you can use to review what words start with letter A. You most likely will have talked about most of these letter A words! Use counters, puffs, or our personal favorite, snack crackers, to cover the words that begin with the letter A. (And then eat a little snack from you snack cracker covers!)
Activity #8- Letter A Patterns
Patterning is a basic match skill we can start working on with our kiddos. Have your kiddo help you cut up the pattern squares. There should be more then you need! Talk through the pattern with your kiddo and see if they can figure out what picture should come next. I also provided a black pattern paper so if you have your own small objects (erasers, different types of crackers, counters etc.), you can create your own patterns!
Activity #9- Race to the Top
We really aren’t at the point that we can write letters on our own over here, but tracing letters is great practice. You will need to print out the spinner and tracing page. Use a paper clip and a pencil to make your own spinner. Let your kiddo spin, and see what color you land on. Find the same color column on your tracing sheet and trace the first (bottom) A in that column. Continue this process until one of the colors makes it to the top and wins!!
Activity #10- Letter A Book List
Don’t forget to read some good books too! We have a list of our favorite letter A books here. But take a look at your books or check out your local library too. If it features a letter A word, then feel free to use what you have!
This is just a sampling of the activities I have in my plans. Download the entire plans here to see all the activities and let me know what activities your kids love the best!
