What You Need:
– Wild West Wanted Numbers Printable (Free at the end of this post)
– Scissors
–Â Mini Erasers or Western Stickers
What is subitizing:
Subitizing is just a fancy word for looking at a picture and knowing the number without needing to count. For example, when you roll a dice you recognize the number each side represents without counting the dots. Practicing subitizing skills helps your child improve their number sense which will strengthen so many math skills down the road!
How to Play this Wild West Preschool Number Activity:
First, you will need to get your activity read! Print the recording sheet and the number cards. Cut apart the number cards. There are a few ways you could use these cards! First, you can hide the number cards around your house. Now have your child search for the wanted numbers. With each card they find, have them cover the matching ten frame on the recording sheet. We used some fun western themed stickers to cover the ten frames, but you could use mini erasers or math cubes too.
Option #2 is more of a challenge. For this version you will want to use the blank recording sheet and the math equation mat. You can also print two copies of the number cards and hide them throughout the room. Your child will now find two number cards. Add these number cards to the equation mat and let your child add them together. You can use manipulatives to count out each number if needed. Once they solve the equation, you can write the whole equation on one of the empty wanted signs.
Finally, if you want to move the fun outside you could substitute rocks for your number cards. Label each rock with a number using a sharpie marker. Head over to the sandbox or water table. Hide the rocks in the sand. You could even give your child a colander and let them sift through the sand looking for the rocks. Once they have found a rock they can identify the number and cross it off on the recording sheet.Â
Which ever way you choose to play you are sure to have fun learning!!
