What You Need:

– Animal Family Tracing Cards (Free at the end of this post)

Scissors

 Pom poms, Playdough, or markers

Why practice tracing:

We all know eventually our kids will need to learn how to write letters and then words and then sentences.  But there are so many things we can do to strengthen those muscles before they are ready to start making more formal writing!  These tracing cards give your child the opportunity to strengthen those hand muscles in several different ways!

How to Play with these Animal Family Tracing Cards:

First, you want to prep your activity!  Print the cards out and cute the strips apart.  If you want to reuse these cards I would laminate them or at least print them on cardstock.  Now you get to choose which way to play!

Option #1 is to use pom poms or another small object to make a path from the baby to the momma animals.  This is a great option for preschoolers that are not ready to use a marker to write!  The pom poms are small and they will be using those fine motor skills as they place each pom pom on the path.  And as an added bonus they are practicing moving left to right, which is a great pre-reading skill!

Option #2 is to use playdough to create the path.  Once again your preschooler will be strengthening those muscles as they roll out a long playdough snake.  Then they can place it on the card and mold it to fit the path.

Option #3 is to use a dry erase marker and trace the path.  If you choose this option, I would definitely laminate the cards before use.  This is a great option if your child already loves to color and is beginning to be able to hold a marker appropriately.  And if you laminate them you can use them over and over!

Happy Learning!!
