Preschool Rocket Subitizing Puzzles

These preschool rocket subitizing puzzles are a great easy activity for your space loving preschooler!  What is subitizing you ask?  It is a fancy word that really means you are able to look at a small group of objects and know the amount with out counting.  So think about when you roll a dice or see someone put up fingers to show a number.  You don’t have to go count the dots on the dice or count the fingers up.  You know what number they represent.  Practicing subitizing skills helps our kids develop better number sense!

How to Play Preschool Rocket Subitizing Puzzles:

First, print off your preschool Rocket Subitizing Puzzles.  Cut each puzzle apart.  There are four on each page.  Then cut each puzzle on the dotted line making two pieces.  One side of the puzzle will have a standard number and the other will have the number represented in an image.

I like to put all the number pieces in one pile and the picture pieces in another and then let your child search through and find the matches!  With subitizing the goal is they can look at the picture and know what it represents, but if your child isn’t there yet, it is perfectly fine if they need to count.  The more exposure they have to these various symbols the more they will begin to truly be able to subitize.

Another idea to add even more interest could be to add the puzzle pieces to a simple sensory bin.  Honestly, adding a sensory bin is one of my easiest go-to solutions if I want to jazz an activity up a bit!  Enjoy friends!
