Surviving Football Season

September 1, 2017

It’s that time of year again, ladies!  The time that can bring instant joy to our husbands and instant eye rolls from us (or maybe that’s just me!).  Yes, it’s football season!

Now let me just say, I am not at all an anti-sports wife.  I grew up watching sports with my older brother.  I have lived my whole life in Nebraska, so of course I have seen and cheered for the Huskers in plenty of football games.  I like sports….to a point.  Football season can just so easily turn into football all day every day.  I mean we have college games on Saturday, NFL on Sunday, Monday night football and Thursday NFL games.  Even for a girl that likes sports, football can get a little old.

However, football is the hubby’s favorite sport, so football is unavoidable.  For the first few years of our marriage I really started to hate football!  It was really a point of conflict in our relationship.  But along the way I was convicted.  My mom has sat through many a NASCAR race to spend time with my father, so in that spirit I realized I needed to find a way to enjoy this with my husband.  The answer to my football frustration came in a little healthy family competition!

A few years ago my family began a Fantasy Football League together, and it has been a game changer for me!  If you aren’t familiar with Fantasy Football, you draft players for your Fantasy Team from any team in the NFL.  Your players earn points based on how they individually perform that Sunday.  So yes, football is still on my TV a lot on the weekends, but now I have an investment in it all.  I will say I am a pretty competitive person, so if one of my players is playing, I want to see how he is doing!  And it has helped me invest in something that is important to my hubby.  Honestly, he is great at supporting my interests, even when I know they aren’t his thing, so I want to give him the same support!

So if you have endured hour after hour of football in the fall, try fantasy football this year and see if it makes a difference for you!  Find a group of couples to do it with, or reach out to your family and have it be a family event!  And let me know if it makes your football season a little more bearable!
